History

Victimology in Croatia started in Zagreb in early seventees of the last century introduced by Prof. Zvonimir Paul Separovic who brought this new discipline and a new field of research from abroad. He attended all previous international symposia of victimology(Jerusalem 1973, Boston 1976, Muenster 1979 and Tokio 1982) In his capacity as a Vice-president of the World Society of Victimology (established in Muenster 1979, when he served as the chairman of the Steering Committee) he succeeded to bring the Fifth International Symposium of Victimology to Zagreb, Croatia (former Yugoslavia). Soon after the Yugoslav Society of Victimology has been established

The Croatian Society of Victimology was founded in 1990.

Due to the war conditions since 1991.the CSV has been very much involved in studying war victims and human suffering in the war. Since 1992, the CSV has established the Centre for Genocide and War Victims which has been collecting data and evidences on genocide and war victims and has established cooperation with UN Expert Commission for War Crimes in Former Yugoslavia (ITCFY) under chairmanship of Professor Shariff Bassiouni by bringing victims and victim-witnesses to them as a source of information and evidence for their plight.

Conferences and Congresses

CSV has organized series of conferences and workshops on genocide and war victims, with special regards to children, refugees, invalids etc.

Since 1998 CSV is organizing its congresses, the premier event of the Society. Held every three years (1998, 2001, 2004 and 2007) and attended by hundreds of CSV members as well as academics and professionals from a wide variety of related fields. Discussions at these events focus on the many aspects of victimology, including – but not limited to – war victims, victim rights, victim assistance, and the role of the victim in the criminal justice system, victimization surveys, victimization prevention, and victims of abuse of power.

The First Croatian VictimologyCongres held in 1998. in Zagreb opened by Prof. Gerd Ferdinand Kirchhoff, president of the WSV.

The last Forth Criaotian Victimology Congress was held in 2007. in Zagreb under high patronage of Professor john P.J. Dussich, in his capacity as  the current  president of the WSV. In his letter of appreciation, to Prof. Zvonimir Paul Separovic, president of the congress, he wrote: „This event continues  your admirable  pioneering  victimological and humanitarian efforts not only in your own country and your region but also throughout the world.“
The next the Fifth Croatian Victimology Congress will be held in 2010 in Zagreb, Croatia.
